This course examines major themes in the history of Latin America from Independence to the present day. Students will learn about modern nation building, discuss important topics in Latin American experiences of liberalism, socialism, and military dictatorship, as well as analyze ongoing struggles for democracy. In addition to watershed events and pivotal figures, special attention will be given to the roles of women, indigenous people, Afro-descendants, and workers.
