(Spring 2015)

07:20 PM to 10:00 PM W

Section Information for Spring 2015

This course examines the history of sexuality from the late 18th century to the present. The focus will be on Europe and, to a slightly lesser extent, on the United States. Since there is no linear way to study the subject, we will take a problem-oriented approach and start by examining how key theorists and historians have approached the topic. Other topics to be explored include: sexual ideologies and identities; the regulation of sexuality; sexuality, modernity and the city; the professionalization of sexuality; sexual rebels and sexual liberation movements; sexuality and the state.

Readings will be a combination of monographs, documents and autobiographical materials and/or works of fiction. Assignments will be 2-4 short essays, take home midterm and final, and the review of a novel chosen by student.

This course fulfills the U.S. 1861-1914 OR 1914-present requirement.
