HIST 388-001: Burial and Ritual in Medieval Europe

The course surveys burials from pre-historic to medieval periods.  Lecture and discussion will examine the rituals and sacred spaces that developed around death and burial. The idea is to track through time those features which have endured, as well as to identify the introduction of innovations.  Readings will be drawn from scholarly journals and on-line resources.  Discussion will explore the various theories advanced by scholars to explain the archeological and textual evidence.  Course work will be comprised of quizzes, work-sheets, and one research paper.
