Adila Laïdi-Hanieh is a writer and academic focusing on Palestinian arts and cultural practices, modern Arab intellectual history, and cultural spaces and processes. Her academic work focuses on critical theory, esthetics, ideology, and postcolonial studies.
She published in 2008 the first cultural review of contemporary Palestine, which commissioned texts and art work from confirmed and emerging artists, novelists and poets from Palestine and elsewhere: Palestine: Rien ne nous Manque ici (Palestine: We Lack for Nothing Here). It is the first book to study contemporary Palestine in an ‘introspective, multidisciplinary, and critical manner.’
Her essays and reviews have appeared in the Journal of Palestine Studies, Contemporary Practices, l’Art-Même and Weghat Nazar, among others.
Laïdi-Hanieh ran the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre in Ramallah from its 1996 establishment until 2005. There, she curated in 2001 the international touring memorial art exhibition 100 Shaheed-100 Lives.
From 2007 to 2009 she was an artistic advisor, and member of the steering committee of the 2008-2009 MASARAT Palestinian cultural season in Belgium.
On March 8, 2005, Laïdi-Hanieh received the Woman of the Year award from Bethlehem University, on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
Her work has been covered by ABC, Al-Hayat, Asahi Shimbun, CNN, The Daily Star, The Financial Times, The Guardian, Los Angeles Times, La Libre Belgique, Le Monde, The New York Times, Moustaqbal/Future TV, among others.
She taught from 2006 to 2008 Arab intellectual history, and the first course on Palestinian arts at Bir Zeit University. In 2008, she won a Fulbright scholarship to study for a PhD in Cultural Studies at George Mason University, and won subsequent research grants and fellowships from the University’s Ali Vural Ak Center for Global Islamic Studies in 2011, and from the Open Society Institute in 2012.
Laïdi-Hanieh is a cofounder of a number of arts and culture organizations and foundations –on whose governing boards she served-, such as: The Arab Fund for Arts & Culture (Beirut), Al-Mawred al-Thaqafy [Cultural Resource] (Cairo), the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre Foundation (Ramallah), and Shashat (Ramallah). She was part of the World Economic Forum’s ‘Young Arab Leaders’ initiative and a member of its Council of 100 Leaders of Islam-West Dialogue (2002-2005), and is a member of AMCA, the Association for Modern & Contemporary Art of the Arab World, Iran & Turkey (Denton, TX) .
She has also lectured and appeared as a panelist at numerous venues and conferences, such as at the Library of Congress, Georgetown University’s annual CCAS Symposium, the Brookings Institution (2009), Les Halles de Schaerbeek, the Sharjah Biennial, Art Dubai’s Global Art Forum, les Rencontres Ibn Rochd, London’s Royal Geographic Society, Tokyo’s Institut Francais, as well as the inaugural lecture at the Diwan Dar Abdellatif of Algiers in 2009.
Adila Laïdi-Hanieh was born in Algeria and was educated there and in Jordan, where she studied painting with modernist painter Fahr el Nissa Zeid.
