East Building 201
Section Information for Fall 2017
This general education course introduces you to the rewards of reading literature from around the world. We shall focus on a variety of stories and one short novel along with several plays, all from outside North American and Western Europe.
The course mixes lectures and discussion that aim to enhance your appreciation for this body of writing. Be prepared to cover the world, but remember that literature gives unique insights into particular people, places, not broad generalizations about entire regions!
The readings range from East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East to Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe/Russia. Coverage includes Nobel Prize winners like Mahfouz, Soyinka, Gordimer, and Garcia Marquez as well as other notable figures like Tolstoy, Ionesco, Premchand, and Murakami. Writing includes two papers, some shorter exercises, and a final exam. You also have the option of acting in short scenes from our readings in world drama.
