ENGH 432: Topics: British Authors

ENGH 432-002: James Joyce
(Spring 2019)

01:30 PM to 02:45 PM TR

Section Information for Spring 2019

This course is for the first timer reader of James Joyce and is devoted to reading his major works: Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses with an emphasis on his stylistic development. We will situate our readings within various ways of approaching the text including Irish history and culture, theories of narration, Joyce criticism, modernist studies, and source texts. It is often said that Joyce is the best teacher for how to read Joyce in that his stylistic experiments build upon one another so that each formal development helps prepare the reader for the next. In this way, the course is designed as an introduction to Joyce that will provide the student with tools for further investigations into his work as well as other experimental forms of narrative during the modernist period and after.
