This course is designed to introduce graduate students to the theory and practice of museums in America, history museums in particular, but other types as well.  We will examine the origins of museums and specific historical institutions as well as the leaders who influenced the field.  History and memory, surviving controversy, the changing role of museums, museum learning, the creation of exhibitions, the future of museums, as well as museums and innovation are among the issues covered.  In the process the class will gain an understanding of the many challenges facing museums as well as the process of proposing, researching, and executing an exhibition.  We will visit several museums to talk with staff and get a ground level view of their work.  The creation of a draft NEH exhibition proposal is one of the requirements of the class. 

HIST 691 DL1 is a distance education section taught synchronously. Students should expect to meet on the day and time scheduled.

General introduction to museums of history and museum studies in the United States, intended for interested citizen as well as for assistance to students in course and career choices. Explores development, present state, and future possibilities of U.S. Museums, with some reference to international developments. May not be repeated for credit.
Recommended Prerequisite: 6 hours of U.S. HIST or permission of department.

Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Junior Plus, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.

Enrollment is limited to Graduate, Non-Degree or Undergraduate level students.

Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
