Section Information for Fall 2020
This course requires students to write an article-length (25-30 page) research paper based on a study of primary sources and the relevant secondary literature on the topic. Students will work on a subject of their choice, developed in consultation with the instructor. The paper may deal with people, ideas, or events anywhere in the world from the mid-eighteenth century through the first two decades of the nineteenth century. Topics may include the French and Indian War (Seven Years War) or revolutions in North America, France, Ireland, Haiti, India, or Latin America. In addition to political or military subjects, students are encouraged to consider issues of social or cultural significance, or matters relating to women, gender, slavery, race, religion, trade, or diplomacy. Only the availability of primary sources related to your topic limits the field. Topics need to be focused, narrower rather than broader in scope (for example, Not “what were the effects of the American Revolution on slavery?” but rather “what effects did the American Revolution have on enslaved people in Fairfax County, Virginia, from 1776 to 1820?”) Students are encouraged to contact the instructor prior to the first class meeting to discuss possible research subjects.

Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.
Enrollment is limited to students with a major in Cultural Studies, Education (Community College) or History.
Students in a Non-Degree Undergraduate degree may not enroll.
