SOCI 208 - 001: Introduction to Race and Ethni

What is race? What is ethnicity? Why do race and ethnicity continue to exert a powerful influence in people's lives in many parts of the world? How does a comparative examination of race, ethnicity, and migration
complicate ethnic relations? This course uses a historical lens to explore migration in societies/countries with long established racial and ethnic
relationships to broaden understanding of the constructed nature of race and ethnicity. This analysis reveals similarities and differences often taken for granted in studies of race and ethnicity. From the Syrian refugee crisis in Europe to the fatal police shootings of unarmed Black men in the United States to rising anti-immigrant sentiments in Europe and America, racial and ethnic relations remain pressing social issues that need systematic examination and understanding.
