We hope you can make it to our colloquium "The Storm State: The Political Economy of Government in the Age of Climate Crisis" by Christian Parenti, who is an investigative journalist, academic, and author.
Below is a summary of his talk:
When climate change-related crises like mass flooding hit, people turn to government for assistance. This turn happens almost regardless of ideology because only government has the means to respond at the appropriate scale. How a state responds reflects its existing capacities and ideological trajectory, but the management of climate disaster and recovery, in turn, reshape the state and politics. In this lecture, Parenti will explore the political economy of state formation and evolution in relation to environmental disaster.
Christian Parenti is associate professor of economics at John Jay College, City University of New York, and the author of Tropic of Chaos: Climate Change and the New Geography of Violence (Nation Books, 2011), among other notable works.
