The Uses and Abuses of Jim Crow: Contemporary Race Theory and the Problem of History

Thursday, February 2, 2023 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM EST

Zine Magubane

Contemporary Race Theory often uses the analogy ‘we are living in an era of the New Jim Crow.’ In this talk I will discuss the ways in which much of contemporary theory misunderstands history—particularly the Jim Crow period—and how that misunderstanding is the source of many critical and conceptual shortcomings.

Zine Magubane is Professor of Sociology and African and African Diaspora Studies at Boston College. Her books include Bringing the Empire Home: Race, Gender and Class in Britain and Colonial South Africa (University of Chicago Press, 2004), and she is currently working on a book tentatively titled Slavery, Colonialism, and the History of American Sociology.
