Elizabeth Bernstein: Brokered Subjects: Redemptive Capitalism and Sexual Investability

Colloquium

Thursday, October 31, 2013 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM EDT
Johnson Center, B

As corporations increasingly claim the issue of “sex trafficking” as a focus of their global Corporate Social Responsibility campaigns, it might be productive to ask, not how sex got entangled with “human trafficking,” but rather: What work do non-sexual concerns with global supply chains do in sedimenting a particular configuration of sexual politics? What might “debt-bondage-as-modern-slavery” have to do with other discourses of economic inequality and exploitation? And how does the shift from “sex trafficking” to “human trafficking” produce a politically and economically profitable form of social investment?

Hosted by Cultural Studies Colloquium.

Sponsored by Cultural Studies, University Life, Women and Gender Studies, Interdisciplinary Curriculum Collaborative, Global Affairs, & Sociology and Anthropology.
