Political theory has recently increased attention to the role of the feeling body in political imagination, and to the role of the state in endowing that body with value. Inspired by these approaches and Hannah Arendt’s suggestion that Charlie Chaplin represented “the entrancing charm of the little people,” this presentation examines Chaplin’s cinematic re-imagining of the political body, especially in the light of his attention to poverty as a form of statelessness. Chaplin provides resources to challenge money’s power over life and the body.
