Formal Feelings: Political Economy and Aesthetic Autonomy
American society has been extremely ingenious in inventing ways to misunderstand itself (cultural studies is one of them). This talk will be about the contribution high art can make to correcting those misunderstandings.
Walter Benn Michaels teaches English at UIC. His most recent books are The Shape of the Signifier (2004) and The Trouble with Diversity (2006), and he has just completed a new one, The Beauty of a Social Problem, from which this talk is drawn.
Hosted by Cultural Studies Colloquium.
Sponsored by Cultural Studies, English Department, University Life, & Interdisciplinary Curriculum Collaborative.
