Displacement Day

Thursday, April 9, 2015 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EDT
Student Union I, Room 3A

You are invited to participate in George Mason University’s third-annual Displacement Day, taking place April 9th. Hosted by the student organization Working Group on Displaced Populations, we will be raising awareness of the plight of international refugees by organizing both action-oriented events a speaker series throughout Displacement Day. At 3 pm in the Piedmont Multi-Purpose room Cultural Studies professor Craig Willse will be speaking about his research trip to Palestine.

The Working Group on Displaced Populations (WGDP) is a group of students, faculty, alumni, and other interested parties working to send aid and support to displaced populations through regular meetings, film screenings, seminars, and workshops.  We recognize the definition of “displacement” to be anyone forced from their home by fear or want, including refugees, internally displaced persons, immigrants, child soldiers, and the victims of human trafficking. Through research, instruction, coordination, and awareness, WGDP helps improve the response to displacement-related issues on local and individual levels. Displacement Days is our largest example of our work on-campus.

April 9th will feature student-focused events related to displacement, including the opportunity for student organizations to try their hand at building refugee shelters, and an academic stage with forty-minute lectures and panel discussions held hourly between 9am and 5pm (eight in all). Previously, sessions covered the history of anti-trafficking efforts, gender violence among displaced populations, resettlement in the United States, and Muslim, Iraqi, Palestinian, Filipino, and Kashmiri refugees among various other topics.
